Pssst! Don’t tell the boss, but the week is pretty much over. Even if your boss just happens to be the person you see in the mirror, I’m guessing you’ve had it up to here (picture my hand at eye level) with his or her crap this week. You made it over the hump, but if that’s not enough to turn up the corners of your mouth, wear a pair of shoes that make your eyes AND your toes happy. The Lucinda Air by Cole Haan, with its unexpected color combination, sharp brogue detailing and Nike Air technology should do the trick. They say you understand the value of practical things like work and rules, but you’re also well aware of your freedom to add your own spin. This simple mixture of Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey and Irish Mist Liqueur will knock the edge off more quickly than a boxer’s jab, and if you drink it too quickly you may feel like you’ve gotten a punch to the chest. However, sipping it will reveal a smooth, smoky flavor that’s slightly sweetened with honey but still respectable enough to get you cool points from the guys. However slowly you drink, still try not to drink to many. I’d hate to hear that you ended up in a bar fight because someone called you drunk.

1 1/2 oz. Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey

3/4 oz. Irish Mist

Serve in a rocks glass over ice.

The Brazilians Are Coming!

 

Brazilian shoe brand, Melissa, has become pretty popular in the US with it’s surprisingly chic rubber shoes and designer collaborations (Jason Wu, Vivienne Westwood, Gareth Pugh, to name a few). It only makes sense, then, that it’s digging its proverbial heels in with a brick and mortar location here in the States. Opening on February 8 at 102 Green Street in SoHo, the store will have the same super-artsy gallery feel as the flagship location in Sao Paolo. The opening will feature an installation by Eli Sudbrack (same guy who designed Lady Gaga’s holiday workshop at Barney’s New York). Shoppers, rev your engines. It’s time to buy some rubber! According to the Chinese calendar, today begins the Year of the Dragon (Year of the Water Dragon, according to Wikipedia). It’s considered the luckiest year in the Chinese Zodiac, so I’m hoping the Mega Millions gods and the Shoe Fairy look favorably upon me (and all of you). If you’re celebrating on the East Coast, you’re probably dealing with some wet weather. A pair of rubber-toed, platform, lug soled booties in theme-appropriate red, like these Philip Simon Kevoik Boots (available at amazon.com for $116.76) are an on-trend choice. Recipe:

2oz CAMUS Elegance VSOP Cognac

.5oz Grand Marnier

.25oz ginger liqueur

Combine all ingredients with ice and stir. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with an orange twist.

 

Remember to enjoy this drink responsibly. Have to many too quickly, and you’ll change your luck for the worse.

Anyone reading this probably enjoys a good cocktail or five, but how skilled are you at making them? Do you find yourself creating custom cocktails for social gatherings? No Mess Monday: In honor of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement

 

These Shoes Walked Way More Than A Mile

 

The shoes pictured above epitomize the thought of “No Mess.” They belonged to a civil rights activist named Juanita T. Williams and carried her the 54 miles from Selma to Montgomery, AL in demand of equal voting rights for African Americans in March 1965. She and the twenty-five thousand other protestors who walked with her were tired of having their Constitutional rights denied and refused to willingly accept it any longer. Posted here in honor or Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his contribution to the Civil Rights Movement and the advancement of human rights in general, they represent an amount of bravery and strength I can’t even imagine. They are a symbol of the struggle that made it possible for me to live the life that I live. I look at these shoes, with the lifts worn off the heel and the insole almost detached, and I see a beauty that surpasses any heels I’ve ever seen.

Booze Clues: 4 Golden Globes- Inspired Cocktails to Try

 

A Toast to the Best

The Hollywood Foreign Press is celebrating the best of the best (at least in their opinion) on the big and small screen at the Golden Globes tonight. I know, you’re more concerned with who wins on the red carpet, and I’m totally consumed with the shoes. Still I think we can all agree that a good drink goes well with the festivities. Here are a couple of Golden Globes inspired cocktails you may want to sip while crossing your fingers for your favorite stars.

 

The Velvet Rope

Ingredients:

· 2 oz Herradura Reposado

· ¾ oz Fresh squeezed lemon Juice

· ½ oz Simple syrup

· ½ oz egg white

· ½ oz Red Wine – Zinfandel works best here

Place Herradura Reposado, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white into an empty shaker. Close shaker and shake with no ice, this technique is known as dry shaking and it emulsifies the egg leaving the drink light and fluffy. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled coupe/cocktail glass. Float the red wine over the foam.

 

Take Me Out To The Moneyball-game

1 oz. Frangelico

2 oz. Wild Turkey 101

1 oz. Amaretto

.25 oz. squeezed lemon juice

1 pinch salt

4 oz. soda water

Handful of Cracker Jack, finely crushed

Rub half a lemon around the rim of a glass and place into crushed Cracker Jack to coat the rim. Combine Wild Turkey, Frangelico, Amaretto, lemon juice and salt in a shaker. Mix and strain into a glass with rocks and top with soda water.

 

Musical Mule

1.5 oz. Russian Standard Vodka

1 lime wedge

5 oz. Regatta ginger beer

Build cocktail over ice in a Russian Standard Copper Mug Add 1.5 oz of Russian Standard Vodka. Squeeze a wedge of lime
Top with 5 oz of Regatta ginger beer

 

Bridesmaid Margarita

2 oz. CAMUS VS Elegance
1 oz. Sweet & Sour Mix
1 oz. Grand Marnier

Combine all in a shaker with ice; strain into a small rocks glass with salted rim. Garnish with a lime wedge

Winter’s chill has finally set in for most of us (to my chagrin), and though some are actually able to escape for resort season, others of us can only fantasize about warmer temps. Why not get a jump on spring with a blooming pair of shoes, like the Mira sandal from Jimmy Choo’s Spring 2012 collection ($2695 available for preorder at JimmyChoo.com). It’s corsaged ankle strap, leopard print vamp and 5.7 inch orange pin heel make it a walking party. Though you may not be able to wear it outside yet, There’s nothing wrong with a red carpet-themed house party, where everyone dresses like they’re in Southern California (and tries to guess who will win what on Sunday at the Golden Globes). You’ve never shyed away from all-eyes-on-you shin digs before… why not create your own?

 

In keeping with the Golden Globes theme, consider serving a cocktail inspired by one of the nominees, like the Lucid Supernatural Sip (the muse for which was FX’s American Horror Story, a nom for Best Television Series in the Drama category). Made with LUCID Absinthe, white crème de cocao, cocnut milk and black sambuca, it’s a creamy, sweet-but-tongue-tingling treat that’ll have you and your guests feeling festive. Keep in mind, though, that LUCID is 124 proof (62% alcohol by volume), so this drink is stronger than it may taste.

Recipe:

1 part LUCID®

1 part White Creme de Cocao

1 part Coconut Milk

Drizzle of Black Sambucca

Combine LUCID, White Creme de Cocao and Coconut Milk in a shaker filled with ice. Shake till Frothy and strain into a short rocks glass over ice. Drizzle Black Sambucca down the side of the glass until it floats on the bottom and diffuses through the cocktail.
