Spot-Light: Lantern’s Keep

When the Light’s on…

The rushing crowds and frenetic energy of Midtown Manhattan can be electrifying for newcomers and tourists, but if you’re among the horde of area worker bees, it’s actually more frazzling than anything. For a respite from the madness, duck into the Iroquois Hotel on West 44th Street and head straight back to Lantern’s Keep. You’ll step into an intimate (seats 30 people) turn of the century Parisian salon with a beautiful working fireplace, dim lights and romantic settees.

If the calm ambiance doesn’t help you breathe a sigh of relief, the retro-inspired cocktails- many crafted by head bartender, Theo Lieberman- will definitely do the trick. They’re all decidedly simple in construction because Theo (who’s like the Doogie Howser of mixology) likes the idea of someone enjoying a drink at the bar and then being able to go and make it at home. If your drink happens to require a straw, look forward to sipping from a stainless steel spoon straw, and don’t be surprised if you order the same drink twice, but the glasses aren’t identical. Lantern’s Keep uses a rotation of vintage glassware, some of which comes from Theo’s personal collection and all of which is stored in a chiller until it’s time to come out and play.

Those who enjoy a refreshing tropical tipple will delight in a Regal Rum Rickey. It’s tart, tangy and quite tasty.
Recipe:
2 oz Flor de Cana 7 year
.75 oz simple syrup (equal parts sugar & water)
.85 oz lime juice
Mix ingredients in a shaker and serve in a Collins glass.

Lantern's Keep Theo in Action
My personal favorite was the Stay Up Late (from the Stork Club, 1946). Unfortunately I managed to drink the ENTIRE glass of complex, citrusy goodness without snapping one photo. However, Here’s the recipe:
1.5 oz Beefeater Gin (Their well gin for shaking)
.5 oz cognac
.75 oz lemon juice
.75 oz simple syrup
Shake, pour into a Collins glass, top with soda and garnish with an orange wedge and a cherry.
I recently attended a press event at Lantern’s Keep and joked to a table mate that it seems like the kind of place a man might bring his mistress. She replied, “I’d bring my husband here.” I upped the ante and suggested that she have him meet her and then pretend to be a mistress. Though the vibe is calm and chic, for some reason, there’s a slight air of mischievous sensuality in the air. Maybe it’s the lingering scent of grapefruit zest (ask Theo about his love for the fruit).

Almost There Thursday- World AIDS Day- (Belvedere) RED

Red Means STOP


Sometimes it’s mind boggling how quickly a week goes by. It’s like one minute, you’re fighting Monday blues, and the next minute it’s Thursday already. Add to that the fact that it’s December 1, and you have simultaneous “where did the week go?!” and “how is it already the end of the year?!” moments. It’s also World AIDS Day, which deserves a at least a pause in consideration of not only those we’ve lost to the disease, but moreso those who are surviving- no- living with it. I hope it’s also inspired you find out your status and take full responsibility of your sexual safety. There’s no shame in having an STD talk prior to getting between the sheets. If you’re uncomfortable talking about sex and its consequences, then you probably shouldn’t be having it. (OK off the soapbox and onto shoes.) As a visual observance of the day, consider wearing red pumps, like Tibi’s Firebird Pump (available at Amazon.com, where I’m an affiliate). The embroidered detailing makes it perfect for the holiday season, and the 3 1/5 inch heel makes it practical enough for the office. (You may also want to look into The Red Pump Project, which aims to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/ AIDS on women and Girls)

Recipe:
1.5 oz (BELVEDERE) RED
Splash lime juice
Top with Fever Tree Ginger Beer
Float grenadine on top
Build in highball and garnish with raspberry

Booze Clues: 5 Thanksgiving Cocktails to Compliment your Turkey

Whether you’re traveling to see your family or hosting the big dinner at your house, you’ll probably be washing down your dinner with a cocktail or two. Here’s a handy little guide that’s sure to have the perfect drink for you.

Herradura Thanksgiving Margarita (tart, tangy)

 

Herradura Thanksgiving Margarita

1.5 oz. Herradura Reposado Tequila

2 oz. Cranberry Juice

1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

.5 oz. Honey Syrup

 

 

Add all ingredients into shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into an Old Fashioned glass with ice. Garnish with a sprinkle of cranberries (fresh or dried)

Russian Standard Thanksgiving in Russia (somewhat sweet, but nutty)

 

Russian Standard Thanksgiving in Russia

1 ½ oz. Russian Standard Vodka

¾ oz. Pumpkin puree

½ oz. Frangelico Hazelnut liqueur

½ oz. Lime juice

¼ oz. Agave nectar

 

 

Rim glass with graham cracker crust or top with a seasonal fruit. Shake and double strain into cocktail glass and garnish with nutmeg.

Belvedere Smoky Martini (strong and smooth)

 

Belvedere Smoked Martini

2 oz Belvedere Vodka

Dash liquorice bitters

Stir Belvedere over ice and strain into a smoked dust* coated glass. Drop a dash of the bitters into glass and serve.

To make smoked dust:
Gently toast a piece of white bread with a blow torch. Once the bread starts to go dark brown (not burnt), crumble the bread and pound with a pestle and mortar.

Tequila Avion Harvest Moon

1 ½ parts Tequila Avión Aňejo

1 part Apple Flavored Liquor

¼ part Pear Juice

Splash of Egg White

Dash of Fresh Lemon

Pinch of Ground Cinnamon

In a shaker add all ingredients over ice then shake and strain. Harvest Moon can be served either straight up or on the rocks and garnish with a thinly sliced pear.

1.5oz Dewar’s White Label

1oz Disaronno

1 Bar spoon of honey

.75oz Lemon Juice

3-4oz Hot Water

1 Cinnamon Stick Cracked

 

In a mixing glass add one cracked cinnamon stick, lemon juice, bar spoon of honey, Disaronno, Dewar’s White Label and 2 oz of Hot Water. Stir contents until honey has properly dissolved. Pour contents into toddy glass or wine goblet. Add 1or 2 more ounces of hot water, and garnish with a twist of lemon oil on top

Booze Review: Smirnoff Whipped Cream Vodka

 

Whip it Good

When Smirnoff Vodka sent the bottle of their new Fluffed Marshmallow vodka to try, they also sent one of their Whipped Cream flavor. Consequently, my review crew and I tried both on the same day. Here's what happened when we tried Smirnoff Whipped Cream vodka.

The Sip…

We took a shot to test for strength, smoothness, etc.

Our bartender mixed it with a little tonic

 

The Verdict: Smirnoff Whipped Cream is pretty darn yummy. It has a bit more bite than the Fluffed Marshmallow, but it’s still quite sweet. It’s a good shooter but a great vodka to mix. Though I like the flavor of the Fluffed Marshmallow more, I appreciate that the Whipped Cream provided a little more warmth going down.

Booze Review: Smirnoff Fluffed Marshmallow

 

Fluffy, not Stuffy…

Unless you totally avoid all bars, restaurants and liquor stores, chances are you’re familiar with Smirnoff Vodka in some way. However, I’m willing to bet that you haven’t had their Fluffed Marshmallow flavor yet. They sent Shoes N Booze a complimentary bottle to check out, so I rounded up my review crew and headed to DV Depot in New York to sit at the bar and give it a try.

 

Claudia Mora (Entertainment Publicist), Enovia Bedford (Jewelry Designer) and I met at the DV Depot bar in New York to try out Smirnoff’s 2 new flavors.

The Sip…

We took our first sip of Smirnoff’s new Fluffed Marshmallow flavor…

Our bartender, Erika, mixed it with a bit of cola to see if it plays well with others

The Final Verdict: We all loved Smirnoff Fluffed Marshmallow. It was sweet with a bit of a creamy mouthfeel (you’ll have to taste it to fully understand what that means, but it basically tasted like I was sipping a creamy treat although it was straight vodka). It was also strong enough to provide a buzz pretty quickly. We agreed that it tastes like a holiday drink and will go well into hot chocolate and other warm sippers. My only issue was that you can barely taste the alcohol, so you could almost overindulge before you realize it.

Booze News: Bellus Wines Lauches (With Cheat Sheet Labels)

 

New to Wine? Don’t Whine…

Bellus Wine ShoesNBoozeI’m pretty well versed about cocktails and spirits. However, wine often makes me want to don a dunce cap. Granted, I’m learning (and giving you tidbits of info when they come my way), but it’s a wide wine world out there (and it can be a bit intimidating).

Jordan Salcito, wine director of New York’s Crown restaurant, realized that lots of us get a bit lost among the vines in the wine store and decided to place a few bread crumbs along the trail with Bellus Wines. Launching today with the goal of empowering wine newbies to learn more about their palate preferences, Bellus retails for around $19.99 (a percentage of the proceeds from each bottle sold will go to the Tory Burch Foundation). The inaugural release, a 2007 Girasole, is a Super-Tuscan red made from Sangiovese, Cabernet, Sauvignon and Merlot grapes (if only you could see the question mark on my face). Apparently, it boasts notes of dark cherry and roasted herbs (sounds um… interesting) and plays well with tomato-based foods and red meats. (I’d so love a bottle for a Booze Review.)

The cool part about this wine, though, is the label, which Salcito joined forces with a Tory Burch designer to conceptualize. The trademarked PALA-TABLE actually has icons on it to indicate its acidity, body, tannins, minerality, oak and complexity. I guess that gives you everything you need to decide whether you’ll like it (except a sip). The wine is available exclusively through Gilt Taste for the next three days and will then be sold by the Crush Wine Company and on Belluswines.com.

There’s been much ado among fashion savvy folks about the Versace for H&M collection. Right before its launch, though, there was almost more talk about the event’s performers than the actual clothes (can you say Prince and Nicki Minaj?). However, the main fixation at Shoes N Booze was the footwear. Shoe-la-la! The collection featured contrasting cap toe booties and zig-zag strapped sandals in scrumptious hues that are right in line with the upcoming resort season’s color palette. I’m a fan.

I just hope the shoes hit the stores in the fun colors at some point… so far all I see on the website is the bootie in all black and the sandal in black and pewter.

Shoe Review: Cougar Mirage Boots

I’m not a big fan of winter. Snow, slush, cold, black ice… none of those things are stiletto-friendly. Actually, they’re not even cute flat boot friendly in many cases. Granted, I have a few pairs of high heeled snow boots, but there are days when I want something a bit more comfortable. I think the shoe gods hear my laments last winter, so they sent a little birdie to mention Shoes N Booze to the folks at Cougar Boots, who then sent me a complimentary pair of Mirage winter boots for review.

Funny thing- the boots arrived right before that freak snowstorm that hit the Northeast a couple weeks ago, so I actually got to test them in some snow. They were AWESOME! Their “Polar Plus” lining feels like Heaven and is sure to keep me warm on frosty days (apparently they’re rated effective in temps down to –22 degrees Fahrenheit). They also feature a very cushy insole, so it felt like I was walking on some type of cloud. They’re not bad looking, either. They’ll be great with jeans or leggings and a sweater this winter. Will I wear them to parties or to get cocktails with friends? No. Will I be glad I have them when walking around New York in the aftermath of a snowstorm? You bet!

If there’s a party or social gathering worth attending, you’re in the know about it. Chances are, you’ll be there working the room, and your ensemble will be the talk of the room. Give ‘em something to talk about in an attention-grabbing pair of snakeskin heels like Brian Atwood’s “Mixie”. With its 5 1/2 inch heel and 1 inch platform, you’ll have no choice but to strut, and the stud detailing gives them a devil-may-care edge. Recipe:

2 parts Maker's Mark®

1 part Berentzen® Apple Liqueur

Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a granny smith apple wheel.

As I said, this drink will pack a punch, so sip slowly. Be the talk of the town for your wild sense of style, not your wild behavior.

No Mess Monday- BCA Month: Nicholas Kirkwood Pink Loafer Pumps

Happy Halloween! Not every office is costume friendly, but you’re one smart cookie, so you know you can dress up as a nerd and still adhere to protocol. You also want to keep your chic. Lucky for you, bookworm inspirations are a big trend for Fall 2011. These Nicholas Kirkwood loafer pumps (available at Kirna Zabete for $995) put a playful spin on a serious look. The tassel and kiltie details are quite proper, and the 5 inch heel is definitely severe. Still, the pink suede with metallic leather trim is ultra femme (and tres apropos for the last day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month). Wear them with a plaid mid length skirt, a fitted button up shirt, suspenders, cardigan and thick rimmed glasses. Don’t forget slightly mussed hair and a pen behind your ear for good measure.

Bleeding-Heart-Martini

Since it’s Halloween and all, you might as well go the spooky route at happy hour. Ask your bartender for a Bleeding Heart Martini (image and recipe via happyhourmagonline.com) at happy hour. Though it has a pink tint, it’s not the fruity concoction you might expect. In fact, it’s not sweet at all, but you’re a tough cookie in addition to being a smarty, so you prefer it that way.

Ingredients:

Dry vermouth
Bombay Sapphire Gin
Pickled baby beet placed on a cocktail skewer

Instructions:

Chill martini glass. Add the vermouth; swirl to coat the glass, then pour out. Add gin to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until chilled. Garnish with a skewered pickled baby beet, and serve immediately.

*Chances are you won’t guzzle this drink. However just in case… remember that even the most intelligent girl tends to make dumb decisions after too many drinks. Be responsible.

1/2 oz. Campari

Shake with ice and pour over cubed ice into a rocks glass. Top with 1.5 oz Tru Blood Beverage and garnish with a blood orange wedge. Just so you know, Tru Blood is a blood orange flavored carbonated beverage from HBO and doesn’t contain alcohol.

 

VuQo Black Cat

VuQo Black Cat1 1/2 oz. VuQo
1 oz. black cherry schnapps
2 oz. Cola
2 oz. Cranberry Juice

FYI, VuQo Premium Vodka is actually distilled from coconut using a process based on ancient technology practiced in the Philippines.

 

 

Corpse Reviver # 2011

Corpse-Reviver-20113/4 part Hendrick’s Gin

3/4 part Lillet Blanc

3/4 part Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur

3/4 part fresh lemon juice

2 drops absinthe

1 drop ROOT

 

Combine ingredients and shake well

Double strain into a chilled martini glass

 

White Ghost

Ole Smoky Moonshine White Lightnin1 oz Ole Smoky Moonshine Whight LIghtnin’ Corn Whiskey
2 oz lemon lime soda

Serve over ice. Garnish with Ole Smoky Moonshine Cherries or a licorice stick.

Manolo Blahnik and socially conscious designer, Marcia Patmos have teamed up to create the Marcia Patmos for Manolo Blahnik collection, a sustainable addition to his Spring 2012 offerings made entirely of raffia, discarded tilapia skins and cork. The collection, which is Blahnik’s first eco-minded endeavor, will feature two styles: a double strap, open-toe flat and a high-heeled strappy sandal in 4 colorways. Each will cost around $895 at Manolo Blahnik stores.
