Booze Clues: Bloody Marys to Beat your NYE Hangover

Hey 2015, Hey!!!

We made it! The ball has dropped & the bubbly has been sipped. The new year is officially here! Now, what? How about New Year's Day brunch, complete with a little "hair of the dog" cure for the slight hangover you're feeling? After all, it is National Bloody Mary Day. Here are a couple of options (along with shoe pairings to help with that heel hangover from dancing the night away) in case you and your friends are meeting at someone's house to exchange resolutions or make vision boards.

Carrot Bloody Maria (by Elise Larson of A Beautiful Mess)

Ingredients

Fresh carrot juice

Bloody Mary mix

Ice

2 ounces Numi Carrot Curry Savory Tea-infused tequila**

Worcestershire sauce

Tabasco sauce

Lime

Fresh veggies, for garnish

Margarita salt, for garnish

Black pepper

                   

Directions: 
Rub the rim of a tall glass or mason jar with a slice of lime. Dip into coarse margarita salt. Fill glass 1/3 of the way with ice. Add tequila, then fill the rest of the glass with half Bloody Mary mix and half carrot juice. Add a few splashes of Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce and the juice of half a lime. Mix with a spoon, then sprinkle a little black pepper on the top and garnish with celery and fresh veggies.

Ole Smoky Green Bloody Mary

Ole Smoky Green Bloody Mary

Ingredients:

6 tomatillos

2 yellow heirloom tomatoes

1 dill pickle

3 garlic cloves

1 serrano chili (seeds remove)

1 oz. Ole Smoky Original Moonshine

1 ½ tablespoon preserved lemon

Juice of ½ lime

3 dashes Tabasco

½ teaspoon each sugar, salt and pepper

Directions:

In a blender, puree ingredients. Fill glass with ice and strain in blended mixture.

Fun Friday- Fleet Week: Jessica Simpson Papaya Nautical Sandals

 

If you live in New York (or happened to catch that episode of Sex and the City), you’re familiar with the influx of friendly, gorgeous men in uniform known as Fleet Week, and since it’s a holiday weekend, you’re in the mood for fun (nautical naughtiness anyone?). You don’t have to rock red, white and blue, snag a sailor, though. Instead, step lively in a pair of striped heels in this season’s hottest hue, like the Papaya platform sandal in “sundown yacht stripe” by Jessica Simpson (available for $89 at Endless.com). The 5 inch heel adds just the right amount of “hey there, sailor,” and the 1.25 inch platform means you can dance the night away once you’ve lured your catch. The coy ankle strap also says you’re fun, but you might not be game for getting your timbers shivered.

 

In celebration of the 25th annual Fleet Week and the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” the mix masters at La Bottega at The Maritime Hotel concocted the Do Ask, Please Tell cocktail. Available from May 23-30, it’s a sweet, refreshing way to put the happy in your hour.

Recipe:

1 oz Stoli Peach
1 oz Amaretto DiSaranno
2 oz OJ
1 oz fresh lime juice

Preparation:

Shake all ingredients well and pour into a highball glass.  Garnish with a maraschino cherry.

*Remember the idea is to have the memory of your gorgeous face etched in their minds as they head back out to sea, not have your name written on the bathroom wall. That said, drink responsibly so you don’t do anything you’ll regret.

Multiple Sclerosis affects close to two million Americans, primarily between the ages of 20 and 40, and at almost three times as many women as men. Quite a few things happened this week that could easily bring your spirits down. There's the fact that folks in Haiti are still without necessities, and millions in the USA are still without jobs. Let's not EVEN get into whatever's happening in your personal life. However, there are things you can do, like donate money or supplies to a charitable organization (like Soles4Souls, Yele or the American Red Cross). Whatever you do, you've got to lift your spirits. You're little good to others if you're not OK, yourself (as they always say on flights, put your oxygen mask on before helping those in need). However tasty it is, don't forget it's still tequila. We wouldn't want you doing the Pee Wee Herman atop a bar table in 6 inch heels, right?

Mother Nature isn't your friend today if you live in the northeastern or mid-wetstern regions of the US. It's ubearably cold, and there are forecasts of snow. You can't miss work because of a little inclement weather, though. Wave "buh-bye" to the bad weather blahs and slip your feet into a warm, comfy pair of rubber boots. One more day left in the work week- Woo Hoo! Feet a little tired from sporting stilettos? Give your toes a break from their woes, and throw on a pair of low heels. This can be a tough shoe group to pull off, but that's what "Almost There Thursday" is all about.
